Psalm 91

(Psa 91:1)
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

Here we have the safety and deliverance chapter. He that dwells with God shall abide under His shadow.

Who are those that abide in the Lord?

Here are the words of Jesus on abiding.

1. John 15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

So we see abiding in God's care is keeping His commandments.

2. Psa 15:1 A Psalm of David. LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?
Psa 15:2
He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.
Psa 15:3
He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour.
Psa 15:4
In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.
Psa 15:5
He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.

Here we see that those that abide in God's presence are they that:

1. walk uprightly
2. works righteousness
3. Speaks truth
4. Avoids backbiting
5. Does no evil to his neighbor
6. Condemns vile persons.
7. Honors those that fear the Lord.
8. Does not lend money charging interest rates.
9. Does not take bribes to hurt the innocent.

If we already have done evil and are guilty of all sins, Jesus Christ can cancel out all these sins and other sins. When we repent or desire to turn from sin and ask Jesus to bring us back to God, He then forgives sins. He then sends His Holy Spirit to abide with us to help us do all the above things thus enabling us to abide in God's place of safety. So the Old Testament is still true but with the coming of Christ we now can have the power within us to help us keep the commandments which before Christ we had no power to keep. So the moral law of the Old Testament is still in place. We now have a savior to both forgive us for breaking God's law and give us the Holy Spirit to keep us from breaking the law until the day we are redeemed from the earth and receive our new bodies that will not have the curse of death upon it.

All these promises come through faith in Jesus Christ. No other religion has the power to save the soul and give eternal life.

Here is what comes to one who accepts Jesus Christ as Lord.

1. Forgiveness of sins.  Sin condemns us to eternal hell without any hope of escape. Jesus cancels this when we believe in Him. This forgiveness is for Jews, Greeks, Muslim, Christians, women, men, children, slaves, freemen, Chinese, African American, white...........................ALL WHO BELIEVE.
2. Power over Sin.  Through the power of the Holy Spirit.
3. Unites us back to God. Breaks down the wall of separation between God and man.
4. The Holy Spirit.  God dwelling with us through the Holy Spirit. We are now never alone.
5. Everlasting life.  A new body from which the curse of sin has no power because in the old body we possessed an eternal soul that accepted Jesus Christ. That soul will abide in the new body safe for all eternity against any sin or curse of the law. That is why our decision to accept Jesus must be now. If we wait until we are dead it is too late.

(Psa 91:2) I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

God wants to be our refuge and our fortress. It is us who hold back, not Him.

(Psa 91:3) Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

He shall deliver all who trust in Him.

(Psa 91:4) He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
(Psa 91:5)
Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

A person who has his sins under the blood of Jesus and is trusting in God need not fear anything. If he is killed, he or she enters eternity where nothing bad can ever touch us again. When God is our trust, whatever happens in this life should not cause us to fear. There are things we fear. I have not yet overcome all fear myself but the goal in completely trusting God is not to fear anything.

Matthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

If we walk in genuine God given love, fear will not have dominion over us.

(Psa 91:6) Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

Perfect love and trust in God will not fear disease.

(Psa 91:7) A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

Perfect love and trust in God should not cause us to fear terrorists.

(Psa 91:8) Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

We shall see the wicked and those that persecute the righteous destroyed.

(Psa 91:9) Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;

Abide in God and enemies shall not overcome us unless it is temporary for a certain purpose but in the end, those that trust God will win and all evil will be done away.

(Psa 91:10) There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

There are some that claim this verse means that if our household abides faithfully in God, no plague shall come close to our dwelling place. I have no doubt that if we really claimed this and believed this, it would be true. In order for it to count we would have to make God our habitation and our whole trust. I don't know why bad happens to people who do trust the Lord but I do know that if we lack wisdom, God says that He will give us wisdom in these matters.  The whole thing we need to do is to trust Him.

(Psa 91:11) For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

I believe in angels that watch over God's people. I don't believe it is necessarily the type of angels described in some of our modern movies and art work. We probably don't know what they really look like but they can take on the form of men. We must avoid all worship of angels. A true angel of the Lord will not accept our worship. Any angel that does is not God's angels.

(Psa 91:12) They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

The devil used this verse to try to get Jesus to cast Himself down from a high place. Jesus could have had the angels deliver Him from the cross but He did not come to be delivered but to die for sins.

(Psa 91:13) Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

A person of faith in God should not fear animals. At the same time we do not handle snakes and wild animals for a side show to demonstrate the power of God. God knows how to make Himself known. His Spirit is to lead us, not us lead His Spirit. When a viper came upon the Apostle Paul, he wasn't hurt. Paul did not go out a seek a viper to demonstrate God's power. One just happened to be nearby and tried to bite him. He simply shook off the viper and the people marveled that he wasn't hurt. It wasn't done by Paul's planning but God showed His power through what could have been a tragedy.

(Psa 91:14) Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

When we make us our minds to love God above all others, He will reward us for doing so. Sometimes we have to choose between pleasing God and pleasing men. We may lose favor with our family and friends by choosing God. Some may have to lose their lives by choosing God and living by God's word but in the long run, the faithful will gain and the unfaithful will lose.

Mark 8:35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.
Mar 8:36
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
Mar 8:37
Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Mar 8:38
Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

(Psa 91:15) He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
(Psa 91:16)
With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

Long life is granted to those that keep the commandments of God. An exception might be when one gives His life for the cause of Christ. In any case though we know now that through faith in Christ we may lose this life but will gain eternal life that one one can take away from us. The thing is to trust in God and seek things eternal and not the things of this life. God may grant good things in this life as a result of our faith but no matter what state we live in here, eternal life awaits those the fully trust in Him and have accepted His plan of salvation and forgiveness of sins provided for by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus brings eternal life. Without Jesus there is no life and no way to be saved.

My own father is now 92 years old and is in good health.  His life at times had much heartache and sorrow but he always trusted in God and kept the word of God in his heart.  He has nothing as far as this world's goods but eternity awaits him and his true treasure is in Heaven.  Dad still holds onto the faith in Jesus that he had when he was young.  He honored both his father and his mother also and God has granted him a long life.   Dad was the one who taught me that the bible was truly the inspired word of God without question.  I thank the Lord for the example he set for me to follow.
