Notes on Psalm 19


(Psa 19:1)
To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
(Psa 19:2)
Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.
(Psa 19:3)
There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.
(Psa 19:4)
Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,
(Psa 19:5)
Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.
(Psa 19:6)
His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

If only mankind would stop trying to find an excuse for our existence apart from a creator and just look at creation, they would have their answers. The way the earth revolves in order to cause gravity enabling everything to stay on the earth instead of floating into outer space is a marvel and could not have just happened. Someone planned it that way.

The way everything orbits the sun, the way the earth turns to cause night and day, the way the earth tilts to cause seasons, is amazing. The wonders and majesty of our creator is superb.  Everything works perfectly. If we could only see that if our God would withdraw his protecting hand, we would have no life at all.

Look at the trouble upon the earth. Take a good look at the poverty, war, fighting, hating etc. If one would just study the word of God contained in the bible, you would see that these things are a result of neglecting God and ignoring His word. We can't love without God. I'm not talking of just religion alone. For religion without the true love of God is just as deadly as atheism. Compassion comes from God and without it we cannot love our neighbor as ourselves like the scripture instructs us to do.

We see a world where educators continue to ignore God and try to find another explanation for our existence. Yet their explanations prove worthless and they make no since. How can one thing evolve into another when once life begins, it starts to decay and grow old. Life does not evolve into something higher or better. It decays and dies.

We try in vain to solve the problems of the whole earth but it is a waste of time. The main problem is one that we don't want to deal with. That problem is sin. Sin came into the world when the first created man and woman disobeyed God. That disobedience came as a result of doubt and unbelief creeping in by the temptation of Satan.  That disobedience caused sin to come upon the whole human race. Death of the body resulted. Now there was a danger of mankind being lost forever in a place called hell which was created for the devil and his angels because of their rebellion against God. Anyone who sins is in danger of their souls departing into this place of eternal torment.

What a picture of doom and gloom. There seemed to be no way out. Yet as we study God's word, we discover that God had a plan for mankind to be saved from the sin which would destroy their eternal souls.

He would give them His own Spirit. The Holy Spirit would reside in each one of them and teach them the way of righteousness. The Holy Spirit could not come into a sinful man however. God had to send His own Son to mankind. His own Son not only to pay the penalty for our sin but had to make us free from our sin.  That person God sent could not do any sin Himself or else the sacrifice would be tainted and no good. By the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ the payment of sin was accomplished. Now all who believe in Jesus Christ can be forgiven of sins and saved from the penalty of sin. He then receives the Holy Spirit who come to dwell within each believer in Jesus Christ.  No longer do we have to rely on will power alone to overcome sin.  We have God within us.  The Holy Spirit gives us understanding of the word.  This word is needed daily to keep us from returning to sin. 

(Psa 19:7) The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

The word was given to us to convert us to the way of righteousness. The word is perfect and is the answer to everything needed for mankind to survive and love one another. In the end of our natural life, we inherit eternal life in the presence of God.

So why is the world so messed up? First of all we need to get the gospel into all the world and quit fighting among ourselves. Secondly we need to remember that the world is so messed up because either we have not succeeded in getting the gospel into all the world or else people have rejected the gospel and it has not brought forth the fruit that it needs to produce peace and godliness.

If we Christians are not living godly, then we are not where we should be with the Lord. If we are fighting and bickering, we are not where we ought to be with the Lord. If we are hating, divorcing and living in sin, we have fallen away from our first love in Jesus Christ.

Repent and do the first works and bring the gospel into all the world. You can't tell your neighbor about salvation through faith in Jesus Christ if you are living outside of fellowship with God yourself.

Satan will try his best to hinder the gospel by trying to get believers to return to the sin they were delivered from or become so religious that they add to the gospel or cover up the truth of the gospel by so many commandments and doctrines that are not in the word of God. Another tactic of the devil is to get us fighting among ourselves that we lose our love one for another. Divorce, lust, greed, selfishness, hate, gossip, and many other things are there to rob us of our first love in Jesus Christ. We should earnestly contend for the faith once delivered to the saints.

Jude 1:3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
Jud 1:4
For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

We see here that ungodly living and turning the grace of God into lasciviousness crept into the church back then and is here now.

Lasciviousness is irregular indulgence of animal desires, wantonness and lustfulness. These unnatural sexual desires, indulging in things that harm the soul, and accepting things that are sin as normal are destroying the church. Some use the grace of God to say that they can do these things and still be saved because of God's grace. This is a lie from Satan.

1Corinthians 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
1Co 6:10
Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
1Co 6:11
And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Jesus came not just to forgive us of sin but to save us from sin.  If we return to sin after we have been saved, then we are no longer saved from sin.  It is simple as that.  We need to repent again, if we allow sin back into our lives.   We can't be saved from sin, if we are living in sin. 

Some do deny God and the Lord Jesus but we really can still accept the fact that God exists and still deny Him by not doing what He says in His word. We can deny God by our sinful actions even if we acknowledge His existence.

Remember the devil knows that God exists but knowing God exists is not enough to save the soul. To believe in God is to believe in all that He says. If we say we believe in God and do not what God says, we do not really believe in God.

When we use the grace of God as an excuse to sin, then we are in reality denying the Lord just as an atheist denies Him.

In the United States today we have a widespread lie from Satan causing us to accept homosexuality as a normal alternative lifestyle. This is a lie that will hurt not only us but also the homosexuals themselves. If we shut the door of truth to the homosexual, we leave them no way out of their sin. They will die in their sin if we fail to tell them the truth. That truth is that they do not have to live that way and they can be free through the power of the Lord Jesus Christ. We are accused of hate when we tell them a way to be saved but we must tell them because it is hate when we allow them to be deceived and go out into eternity lost forever in hell. We need to redefine the definition of hate.  Hate is not telling the truth.  Hate is keeping quiet and allowing souls to be lost forever without God.

(Psa 19:8) The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.

We must not be moved away from the Word of God. He did not have men to write these things in vain. They are for our benefit and for our salvation.  The statutes, laws, word of the Lord is RIGHT.   When we accept His word it will cause our heart to rejoice when we hear it.  It will bring understanding to us when we receive the word.   Enlightening the eyes is understanding. 

(Psa 19:9) The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.

We must not lose our fear of God. Fear of God will lead us to living right. His word brings cleansing and purity. These things are true and holy. Let us cleave to them.

(Psa 19:10) More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

How happy we would be if we sought the Lord like we do material possessions because to begin to desire the things of God is to have the true riches. 

(Psa 19:11) Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

We will be rewarded both here and in eternity if we heed to the word of God.  One of the greatest rewards is the salvation of the soul. To save a soul from eternal death is more than anything we could do in our lifetime. 

James 5:20 Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

(Psa 19:12) Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.

We should daily seek the Lord to deliver us from faults that hinder our walk with God, our testimony before others and that which may hinder us from presenting the gospel of Jesus Christ. An example would be that if we come away from fighting our own spouses and did nothing to resolve the problem, how can we tell a co-worker that Jesus is the answer to his or her problems?

(Psa 19:13) Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.

 

 


 

Here is a cry from the heart that he not sin suddenly or rashly without thinking first. We sometimes may react in anger and say or do the wrong things if we don't stop and think first. Maybe this is where the old saying came from to "count to ten" first before we act when we are mad at someone.

There have been many times that I have thanked the Lord that I didn't say something I was going to say or that I didn't do something I was going to do in a moment of anger. Then there are many times when I look back and wish I had not have said something or did something while I was angry.

(Psa 19:14) Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

May this be our daily prayer that the words of our mouth and the meditation of our hearts be acceptable in the Lord's sight. Wow, what a prayer. I like that better than the "Prayer of Jabez". -Dorna
