The Old Revealed in the New Part 1 This is a study showing how often the Old Testament scriptures are referred to in the New Testament. The Old Testament is actually the New Testament concealed and the New Testament is the Old Testament revealed. They both compliment each other and prove the truth of each other. The only scripture they had in New Testament times were the Old Testament. The Old Testament, the law and the prophets were the only scripture they had and was necessary to show the world the whole complete will and mind of God. It is still important today and is there for us to study and understand. We will go first to the book of Matthew and talk about only the scriptures that refer to verses in the Old Testament. I may at times skip those accounts where it is not in the written word but only spoken by the prophets. In some cases the spoken words may have been written in other writings not included in the bible which are no longer available to us but there is enough that is included in the scriptures that we now recognize as "the" word of God to prove that God's word is indeed a divine, inspired, and the infallible word that is relevant to us today as it was in the days that Christ walked in the flesh. NEW Matthew 1:22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Mat 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. OLD Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. We see from Matthew chapter 1 in verse 22 that the virgin bith of Jesus was a fulfillment of Isaiah 7:14. Many prophecies in the Old Testament had an immediate fulfillment and then a later fulfillment. As far as I know there was only one virgin birth and that was Jesus Christ. Christ was placed into the womb of Mary by the miraculous power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus did not have a natural earthly father but only the mother was the natural mother of Jesus. Jesus was the only man that ever lived to adulthood without committing one sin. Had Jesus of committed one sin, He would not have been illegible to die for the sins of anyone else. The just had to die for the unjust. Someone pure and without fault or blemish had to be sacrificed so that those with sin and blemish might have access to eternal life. The animal sacrifices in the Old Testament had to be perfect and without blemish. This pointed to the perfect one to come who would make the one final and complete sacrifices for sins and usher in the way of salvation for all who would turn from sin and believe in this sacrifice. This is why Jesus is the only possible way for any person past or present to be saved and enter into eternal life. Those that did sacrifices in the Old Testament that believed in God and trusted in God to provide a way of salvation for them, would also be saved even though it was before Christ came. Abel is an example of one who sacrificed with faith and was a was not just being religious and doing religious works. Notice the word Immanuel or Emmanuel. It means God with us. Jesus was truly God that came into human flesh. God with us. NEW Matthew 2:4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. Mat 2:5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judea: for thus it is written by the prophet, Mat 2:6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, art not the least among the princes of Judah: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. The second incidence of the New Testament fulfilling the Old is in Matthew chapter 2. When Herod tried to find out where Christ was to be born, he asked the scribes and priests. They knew enough to know of Micah 5:2 which tells of the Christ being born in Bethlehem. This foretells of one to be born that would be ruler in Israel. OLD Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. Actually Herod should have had no fear of Jesus Christ because His time of being ruler in Israel is to take place 100s of years after the death of Herod and at the date of my writing here, we still await that day when Christ sets up His kingdom and literally rules. Had Herod of known that the future ruler of Israel would first have to die for sin in order to save us from sin and grant us eternal life, He would not have been afraid of Christ. He came the first time to make an offering for sin and He will come a second time to rule. Its the latter day rulers who need to fear Jesus Christ, not Herod at that time. NEW Matthew 2:13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. Mat 2:14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: Mat 2:15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. OLD Hosea 11:1 When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt. This seems to be a pattern that was started by Abraham and God was not really pleased with this pattern. God never wanted Israel to trust in Egypt for help but at the first sign of famine, that is what Abraham did, he ran to Egypt. Isaac and then Jacob did the same thing. As a result Israel was in bondage for over 400 years to Egypt. The verse about calling His Son out of Egypt has more than one fulfillment. First of all it was fulfilled when Israel escaped out of the bondage of Egypt by Moses. Then we see later that Jesus came out of Egypt after his family took him there to escape the killing spree ordered by Herod. We now use these things as an example of being saved from sin. Egypt's bondage represents being in bondage to sin and Satan bound for an eternity in hell. Faith in Christ saves us from sin and grants us eternal life. Christ was called out of Egypt and made an offering for sin. We are called out of Egypt to be made free from sin. There is an old hymn in our hymn books called the Son hath made me free. It goes a little like this: I was once in Egypt's bondage, but deliverance came to me Now I'm bound by sin no longer For the Son hath made me free. NEW Matthew 2:16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men. Mat 2:17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Mat 2:18 In Ramah was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. OLD Jeremiah 31:15 Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not. Rachel probably wept for Israel more than once. Jeremiah was probably talking of their captivity and suffering when they were taken captive by Babylon not knowing that he was also prophesying of the time when Herod would slay so many in the days when Jesus would be born. Imagine fearing someone so much that one would put to death the children of the whole country in order to kill one. However, we cannot fight against God. Jesus was to die but not at the time Herod desired for Him to die. The old devil in Herod could not succeed in stopping the promised Messiah from doing what God sent Him to do in order that we might have a hope of being reconciled to God and have eternal salvation. Satan has tried to wipe out Israel more than once to keep Christ from coming and even now He tries to wipe out Israel to keep latter day prophecy from being fulfilled. I say to the Christian church to be careful not to eliminate Israel as God's chosen people. Have nothing to do with the persecution against Israel that is being revived in these latter days. You will be fighting against God. Pharaoh tried it in the days Moses was born and he didn't' succeed, what makes anyone think they can succeed now? NEW Matthew 3:1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, Mat 3:2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Mat 3:3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. OLD Isaiah 40:3 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Notice that John the Baptist preached repentance along with believing in the one who was to come after Him. Repentance from sin is part of our salvation. This may have a double fulfillment in that the two witnesses of Revelation also prepare for the 2nd coming of the Lord. NEW Mat 4:1 Then was Jesus led up of the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. Mat 4:2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward hungry. Mat 4:3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. Mat 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. This is the first incidence of Jesus Himself mentioning the Old Testament law when Satan tried to get Him to use His power as the Son of God to satisfy the natural hunger He suffered after fasting 40 days. Jesus still had His mind on the goal and was not sidetracked by what has sidetracked all before Him. Remember Esau who gave up his spiritual birthright when he was so hungry that he chose to sell his birthright for a bowl of soup. Adam and Eve desired to eat of the fruit that was forbidden in order to satisfy the flesh rather than obey God's word. From the beginning the natural hunger of man got in the way of the will of the spirit. That is why fasting and prayer helps us get victory over flesh. Jesus used scripture to speak to reply to Satan. He quoted Deuteronomy 8:3 OLD Deuteronomy 8:3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live. The word of God, food for our souls is the true bread from heaven. Christ represents that bread as food for the soul. To eat of the bread of life is to simple believe in Him for the salvation of our souls. To believe is to partake of and live by. The Lord's supper or communion is an outward observance in remembrance of what Jesus came and did in order for us to be saved. The sacrament itself doesn't save us but believing in Christ to the point of turning from sin does save us. Jesus was showing us here that the word of God is what counts and what matters most. We see that both the Old Testament word of God and the New Testament word of God is the same. One simply completes the other. NEW Matthew 4:5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, Mat 4:6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Mat 4:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Satan was quoting scripture too that was in Psalm 91. OLD Psalm 91:10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. Psa 91:11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. Psa 91:12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus again answers Him by quoting the law in Deuteronomy 6: 16: OLD Deuteronomy 6:16 Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah. We are never to use the power of God for a sideshow like a magician. The power of God is to bring forth the gospel. Signs and wonders are to prove the truth of the gospel. We are never to major in the sign itself. To throw Himself down would have served no purpose at that time. It would not have resulted in anyone's salvation or the will and purpose of God. We are not supposed to purposely try to bring harm to ourselves to prove God can deliver us. Satan again tries to get Jesus to bypass the cross and get lordship over the earth without dying for sin. However Jesus know that we are to serve only the Lord God and no other. God is the only one who really cares about us. Satan does not care and he desires to steal, kill and destroy. NEW Mat 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. OLD Deu 6:13 Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name. God said, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." He meant it. All idolatry is forbidden in both Old and New Testaments. NEW Matthew 4:13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali: Mat 4:14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying, Mat 4:15 The land of Zebulun, and the land of Naphtali, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles; Mat 4:16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. OLD Isa 9:1 Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations. Isa 9:2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. Isaiah foretells of the day that Christ would bring light among those that dwelt in darkness. This light also spread to the Gentiles and that is where the gospel dwells today. That light is turning back to Israel as we see many Messianic believers coming to Christ. Sadly many Gentile nations are reverting back to the pagan days before Christ and returning to darkness. For those of us who are left, let us occupy until Christ returns by spreading His gospel all over the world. Let us spread that light by way of Internet, radio, television (if we can afford it), local church, and one on one as we tell of the wonderful gospel that will save souls from an eternity in hell. Surely the times of the Gentiles may be drawing to a close just before the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ. God's attention is returning to Israel. The clock is ticking and there is no time to waste. There is no time to play golf. Souls are going to Christless graves every day. This is just the beginning into the journey of searching New Testament Scriptures that quote or fulfill the Old Testament. I'm only on Matthew chapter 4 so the journey is just beginning. It is exciting to see how the gospel has been planned by God to save all those who will believe and how it was spoken of by Moses, promised to Eve and foretold in many prophecies up until the time Jesus came in the flesh and dwelt among men. |
