Local Church history:

The Church of God at Canton, Ohio was set in order at Edgefield, now between Canton and North Canton. Bro James A Henson who was Bishop in the church held prayer meetings in his home there. In the book of the diary Bro A. J. Tomlinson, mentions being there and preaching to the group of people in Bro Henson's home on May 30th Decoration Day, and traveling on after a few days to Toledo. It was about this time that the church was set in order.  On October 1929 the church obtained a small building in Edgefield and had a nice Sunday School organized.

A church building was obtained on Marion Ave. near Navarre Rd. and a man named Harry Jones was pastor.  A Bro H. H. Irwin, who was a Deacon in the church and had recently moved to Canton with his family had prayer meetings in his home. They turned two rooms of their home into a church, and Bro Gilespi, first Ohio overseer  set the present church in order with the following members: H. H. Irwin, Elizabeth Irwin, Hazel Irwin (Glover) who just recently passed away on April 30, 2007 at the age of 96.  To read her obituary click on the name Hazel Glover.  Along with the three above members were Hattie Reed, Holland Ivey, Ethel Ivey, Lillie Reed, Lorin Day (Deacon), Eva Day, Victor Beesaw, B. F. Sedwick, Emily Sedwick, Marie Sedwick (Garner).

Sis Laura Rogers and her husband, Lonnie, were brought from Akron to pastor the church. In a short time, a building was rented on 6th St. SW. in a store building. Soon it moved to a building at 18th and Garfield Ave., then to South Market, on to a church building with parsonage at 9th and Gibbs NE. After about two years the people were informed that the buildings were to be torn down and the lots to be sold. The only available building was a portion of the old building of the "Dueber Watch Works" with free rent. In less than a year it was moved to one store front building after another again on South Market, on two different locations on 9th ST. SW. Finally the opportunity came to buy a building having been built and used by a missionary and his wife, Bro and Sis Housley. They bought it and moved in right away.

Canton was the first church of God of Prophecy in the state to own their own building. Canton was also the first church of God of Prophecy to own their own parsonage. This church was first to sponsor a fund to send the pastor to the General Assembly, thru the Sunday School Dept. It is still operating through the State of Ohio by ruling of State convention.

After about ten years, we had the opportunity to purchase a church building at Navarre Rd. and Park Ave., being vacated by the Free Methodist Church, who had built a new building. They moved into this building about 1952.  Second photo below.  The church worshipped there until the present building was finished in the early 1970's. The church grew and prospered for several years.  A conflict arose and separated some of the people. Those that left started the Faith Fellowship on Nave Rd.  We thank the Lord for those that stayed and kept the work going bringing the church to this day. The above facts are verified by Hazel Glover and Hazel Aukerman.

So far with the help of Lera Dover several of the above are named

Far left third row back is Molly Morella. In the left center, second row  is Reah Brooks and her two girls. Right center second row from the back is Irene West who is still living.  Her mother standing on her right is Edith Morgan. Center right, 4th row back is Lera Dishman (now Lera Dover). Her sister, Elmira Jacobsen is behind her a little to the left. Elmira is no longer living.  Her husband Jim Jacobsen is directly behind her.  Jim died a few years ago.  I remember him when I first started attending Canton Cogop in the year 2000.  I remember being impressed with his friendliness even though he was sick and his health was failing.
